Introduction by the director
The year 2004 was a difficult and demanding time for the ZFMK. On February 15 the director, Prof. Dr. Clas Michael Naumann zu Königsbrück passed away and left behind a prospering institute with several building sites which he would have loved to see completed. In the following months the directorate, lead by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Böhme as deputy director, continued the proceedings successfully. In October 2004 the new director, Prof. Dr. Johann Wolfgang Wägele, took office.
On April 15 the future "Clas-Naumann-building", an important extension of the ZFMK, began to take shape with the laying of the foundation stone. On October 6 we celebrated the topping-out ceremony.
Our new exhibition concept "Unser Blauer Planet - Leben im Netzwerk" ("Our blue planet - life in a network") could be complemented by the innovative exhibition "Arktis - Antarktis" which enables the visitors to gather information on these habitats in an exciting and interactive way.
The administration team of the ZFMK, under the guidance of Mrs. Agathe Paul, has successfully implemented the cost activity accounting (Kosten-Leistungs-Rechnung) which will help to make the distribution and usage of cash resources within the institute more transparent.
This annual report displays the activities at the ZFMK in 2004. Some points are picked out and described in detail, the others are presented curtly by clearly arranged tables.
Prof. Dr. W. Wägele
